SAN ANGELO, TX — With record low temperatures Monday morning many citizens of San Angelo are currently experiencing power outages.
According to AEP, on Feb. 15, 14,565 customers are without power across the AEP region for San Angelo after 33 power outages.
Sources say that this is happening in all cities across Texas due to the unprecedented usage of electricity during this winter storm.
Unofficially, it is estimated that the San Angelo region has an electricity load of about 350 megawatts (MW) on a normal day. Peak load is around 450 MW. Due to increased usage across the state, the state regulatory body ironically called the Energy Reliability Commission of Texas, or ERCOT, is forcing companies like AEP to cut back power in all regions stabilize Texas’ electrical supply. The majority of the power outage today is on purpose.
The National Weather Service is reporting that the temperature outside, -1 degree, is tied for the second coldest temperature of all time.
If you are experiencing an outage report it by following this link. Remember never call 9-1-1 or the San Angelo Police Dispatch to report power outages.
How long a sector of the San Angelo power grid is offline is not available. AEP estimates that 95 percent of the power outage issue in San Angelo is due to the ERCOT mandates. There are some physical outages, but not many, and crews are working to bring those lines back up.
