Suspect Shot By SWAT Team During Hostage Situation

ABILENE, TX -- A domestic disturbance turned into a dangerous situation after a man took a woman hostage at knifepoint.

According to APD, just before noon on Sunday officers were dispatched to a home near S. 22nd and Poplar Streets.

Someone inside the home had called 9-1-1 and the dispatcher who answered the call heard a domestic disturbance in the background.

Specifically, a man was threatening to kill a woman with a knife.

When offices arrived at the scene, they attempted to negotiate with 45-year-old Mario Cearda Rivera, Jr. until the SWAT team could arrive.

As the SWAT team surrounded the home, Rivera exited the house while holding a knife to the victim.

According to officers, the victim and the suspect were involved in a "violent struggle."

One of the SWAT officers fired a single shot and hit the suspect.
