Commissioners Court Approves Renovation of 1915 Courthouse

ABILENE, TX -- As politics at the national level continue making headlines, local government continues its duty of serving their communities.
 
On Tuesday, the Taylor County Commissioners Court accepted a $5.9 million grant that will help renovate the 1915 Old Historic Courthouse.

The grant, provided by the Texas Historical Commission, will restore the historical building.

“That courthouse has a history. It's a significant part of our history as a county," said Taylor County Judge Downing Bolls.

Even though the building has undergone numerous renovations since 1915, but the changes haven't been for good according to the judge.

“It got to the point that it really started looking like an overloaded electric plug," said Bolls.

The estimated cost of the renovation will be between $8-$12 million. The grant will cover a major part of the cost and the rest will be paid by the Texas Historical Commission. It will be paid by using certificates of obligation.

The project aims to be completed in less than three years.
