EDINBURG, TX – The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 25,606 Texans in the last nine months. According to DSHS, Hidalgo County accounts for 1,903 of the reported fatalities.
As the year comes to an end, Hidalgo county launched a new billboard campaign that depicts the hundreds of lives that have been lost so far.
“This is one of the most powerful images that I’ve seen resulting from the pandemic,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “This is a reminder to hold those we love even closer, especially as the holidays approach.”
Shortly before Thanksgiving, the Hidalgo County Judge’s Office asked family members to submit photos of their loved ones who had passed away from COVID-19. According to officials they received hundreds of photos.
The pictures were arranged into a massive billboard that will be located in Weslaco, Edinburg, and McAllen.
“Our continued message is not to gather in large groups, wear a face covering and social distance,” Judge Cortez said. “But have a blessed Christmas in honor of those lives depicted in this billboard.”
Along with the billboards, a slideshow will also be posted on the county's website and social media accounts soon.
