SAN ANGELO, TX – Officers with the San Angelo Police Department were dispatched to a residence off of Verteran's Memorial Drive Thursday afternoon following the report of an alleged assault.
Once on scene a responding officer spoke with the victim who claimed the Defendant, identified as 59-year-old Daniel Contreras, was the person who had assaulted him with a hatchet.
According to the report officers at the scene were able to clearly observe signs of an assault, including a laceration that was noted to the bridge of the victim's nose.
Officers then spoke with a witness at the scene who also positively identified Contreras as the individual who assaulted the victim with the hatchet.
Following a search of the area Contreras was apprehended by officers in a close proximity to the crime scene still in possession of the hatchet used during the assault.
With corroborating statements from the victim and a witness, along with Contreras' confession, and other findings at the scene facts have shown that the Defendant, Daniel Contreras, did then and there commit an assault by using or exhibiting a deadly weapon during the commission of an assault.
On Thursday, Contreras was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail around 7:09 p.m. where he was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, which is a second degree felony in the state of Texas that carries a penalty of up to two to 20 years in a federal prison and fines of up to $10,000.
