Beloved Adult Giraffe at Abilene Zoo Dies

ABILENE, TX – A male giraffe at the Abilene Zoo has died after suffering from bladder stones.

According to KTXS, on September 9, officials with the Abilene Zoo confirmed the death of Mesi in June after urethral obstruction due to bladder stones.

Bladder stones are incurable in giraffes but veterinarians at the zoo did attempt to save Mesi.

Mesi had been at the zoo since 2014. During his time at the zoo Mesi fathered five giraffes and more are on the way.

Mesi had been moved to an off-exhibit for the final two years of his life.
