TDLR Takes Over Gas Pump Metering & Quality Program

AUSTIN, TX — On Tuesday the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation announced the agency will now operate all aspects of Motor Fuel Metering and Quality in the state.

After the Senate Bill 2119 (86R) transferred oversight of those duties from the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) to TDLR, the agency will be tasked with enforcing the fuel quality law.

Starting today, the TDLR will process all licenses and handle investigation and prosecution of all motor fuel metering and quality issues.

The agency has created a public service announcement to educate consumers on possible signs that a gas station pump has been compromised by credit card skimmers.

“This new public service announcement reminds everyone that we all play a part in protecting consumers from gas pump skimmers, and it’s a great way to introduce TDLR as the new regulator of Motor Fuel Metering and Quality,” said Brian E. Francis, TDLR executive director. “I want to personally welcome to TDLR each of the merchants, service companies, distributors, wholesalers, jobbers, suppliers and technicians.

Gas pumps across Texas should start displaying the TDLR consumer information sticker as soon as possible. The TDLR stickers, which merchants can order online, must be placed on gas pumps by Dec. 1, 2020. 
 

The stickers have a Texas shape and include information about the amount of state and federal taxes charged for every gallon of fuel sold, as well as a telephone number and a QR code that consumers can use to file a complaint with TDLR regarding the quality or quantity of fuel that was sold.
