EL PASO, TX — After seven dogs passed away due to heat exposure in the past two weeks, the El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Unit is investigating and urging pet owners to take proper care of their pets.
According to KTXS, two of the cases featured extreme neglect. One dog was found in the direct sun while tethered and tangled on a clothesline.
Another case featured an abandoned dog that was found decomposing in a crate with no food and water.
“If you have a pet, care for it,” said the El Paso Police Department. “As with all crime if a law is broken an arrest will be made. That’s just how it is.”
Like much of West Texas, El Paso is under a Heat Advisory that puts daily temperatures above 105 degrees.
The department urges pet owners to take care of the pets as temperatures rise. In a social media post, the department stated the neglect was beyond cruel
“Cruelty seems an understatement.”
The Humane Society provides the following tips to keep pets healthy and safe during the summer months:
- Never leave your pets in a parked car
- Watch the humidity
- Limit exercise on hot days
- Don't rely on a fan
- Provide ample shade and water
- Cool your pet inside and out
- Watch for signs of heatstroke
- Prepare for power outages

El Paso is collectively one of the least educated cities in the nation.
Of course you're going to find roasted dogs, tangled in chains with not a drop of water in sight, among other deplorable forms of neglect and abuse.
This type of thing is common here in San Angelo, too, and most of us who've witnessed this kind of shit know exactly the type of people who tether animals to clotheslines and tires.
