Sheriff Fights Back Coronavirus in County Jail

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office has announced a second staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 at the jail.

The second employee was a “close work associate of the initial employee” and has been placed in quarantine, but so far no positive COVID-19 cases have been detected in the inmate population.

The second employees’ duties were not inside the main jail facility and did not have interaction with the jail population, received packages, or interact with the public. The sheriff’s office confirmed that due to the nature of his work no additional inmates were exposed to the virus by this employee.

As of Friday, no Tom Green County Jail inmates have exhibited signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Inmates who have been previously tested for COVID-19 remain under quarantine until negative results are received and they have been symptom-free for 14 days.

“Rigorous screening, quarantining, and testing protocols remain in place at the Tom Green County Jail to keep the risk inside the facility as low as possible,” said the sheriff’s office in a press release. “The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office continues to work with Dr. Vretis and Shannon Hospital to maintain a healthy and safe environment while continuing to fulfill our public safety duties to Tom Green County.”
