Abilene Zoo Lost Nearly $1 Million in Revenue During Shutdown

ABILENE, TX – The shutdown that occurred in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many businesses to lose thousands in revenue.

According to KTXS, the Abilene Zoo has lost $840,000 in revenue since they closed their door on March 17. The zoo estimates they have missed 88,000 visitors, more than a third of total annual visitors. The shutdown also caused the cancellation of the 19th Annual Zoolute, Easter event, and Earth Day Festival.

"Spring is the season many new animals are born, which brings out the crowds," said Marketing Coordinator Jennifer Pacheco. "We are also missing out on field trips with students from over 50 Texas counties. It's a large loss for the zoo, and especially when we were working to bring some great new changes.

Director Jesse Pottebaum stated the lost revenue is money that covers vet care, supplies, and food for the animals housed at the zoo.

The Abilene Zoo will be accepting donations on Abilene Gives and is expected to re-open May 18.
