ASU Chews Up Competitors at Meat Judging Competition

Angelo State finished third out of 17 teams at the American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest on Oct. 20 in Omaha, Nebraska.

ASU was one of two Division II schools, the other being West Texas A&M, competing with 15 Division I schools.

ASU junior Clay Kelley of Ballinger was the high scoring individual with 1,038 points, finishing ahead of students from Michigan State and Texas Tech.

Individually, Kelley finished first in Overall Beef and Reasons, tied for first in Pork Judging and Beef Judging, came in second in Beef Grading and ninth in Beef Judging.

In the team event standings, the ASU team of Ty Crooks, Sondra Lohse, Clayton Meyerhoff and Derrick Thivierge, and Clay Kelley, finished second in Placings, and third in Beef Grading and Pork Judging, as well as Specifications and Reasons.

 ASU also finished fifth in Lamb Judging and Overall Beef, and sixth in Beef Grading.

Next up for the team is the Cargill Meat Solutions Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest on Nov. 3 in Friona.
