SAN ANGELO, TX — Police confirmed the reckless wrong-direction driver on North Bryant early Christmas morning was drunk. Police attempted to intercept the driver prior to the rollover, single-vehicle crash that ended 18-year-old Marcos Huerta, Jr’s dangerous joyride at around 1 a.m. Christmas morning.
A San Angelo Police Patrol Officer observed the 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling south in the northbound lanes of N. Bryant Blvd. Soon after, the officer watched the truck depart the prepared surface of North Bryant and smash into a pole. The officer told us at the scene that the truck traveled approximately 100 yards off the roadway at a high rate of speed before hitting the pole. As a result of the impact with the pole, the truck rolled several times back onto N. Bryant and came to a rest on the truck’s roof.
During the rollover, Huerta was ejected through the front windshield of the truck and the officer who witnessed the crash rushed to the driver’s aid where he found him unconscious laying on the ground near the truck.
This is when radio calls were heard about an unresponsive crash victim at the scene. However, several minutes later, Huerta regained consciousness and was able to speak to officers and then to medics who had just arrived. Police at the scene said Huerta walked to the ambulance and boarded it for the short ride to Shannon Medical Center to be checked out.
The subsequent police investigation determined that Huerta was Driving While Intoxicated. After his release from Shannon, police arrested him and he was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on DWI charges. Jail records tell us that he was booked into the jail at 3 a.m., about two hours after the crash, and then released late Christmas morning at 11:58 a.m. after posting a $1,000 bond.
No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash.
