Angelo State Ag Professor Earns Prestigious State Fellowship

SAN ANGELO, TX – Dr. Cody Scott, an Angelo State University alumnus and member of the ASU agriculture faculty, was named a Fellow of the Texas Section, Society for Range Management at the TSSRM’s annual meeting earlier this month in Kerrville.

According to the TSSRM website, “The title of Fellow is conferred upon members of the Texas Section in recognition of exceptional service to the section and its programs in advancing the science and art of range-related resource management. This high honor is granted in belief that special recognition should be given for exceptional and dedicated service to the Texas Section.”

Scott has been an active member of TSSRM for over 30 years, including a term as president in 2015, and has served on numerous committees since 2001. He was named the TSSRM Outstanding Young Range Professional in 2007 and won the Society for Range Management’s Outstanding Young Range Professional International Award in 2008. He has also been a reviewer for the Journal of Rangeland Ecology and Management since 1995.

An ASU faculty member since 1995, Scott is a professor of animal science and research scientist in the Department of Agriculture. He teaches range and wildlife courses and oversees all range and wildlife management activities at the 6,000-acre Management, Instruction and Research Center, more commonly called the ASU Ranch, just north of San Angelo.

Also an avid researcher, Scott has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications in industry journals and has made over 100 research presentations at various scientific conferences. He has also mentored hundreds of ASU undergraduate and graduate students on their own range and wildlife management research projects. Most recently, Scott has overseen the ASU Rangeland Reclamation Project that is funded by $191,500 in grants from the Shell Oil Company and won the 2017 Bruno Hanson Environmental Excellence Award at the annual Executive Oil Conference in Midland.

Scott’s many ASU honors include the 2016-17 Gary and Pat Rodgers Distinguished Faculty Award and the ASU Alumni Association’s 2017 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award. He was also nominated for a 2016 ASU President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor, and he was named a 2009 Professor of the Year by the Student Government Association.

In addition to his TSSRM activities off campus, Scott chairs several contest committees for the San Angelo Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as the FFA Region II Wildlife Contest and 4-H District Livestock Judging Contest, among others.

Scott earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science at ASU and his Ph.D. in rangeland resources at Utah State University.
