Fort Concho Wants a Buffalo Soldier

A grassroots effort to get San Angelo a shiny new buffalo soldier statue is on the rise.

Sue Mims and Reverend Michael Bell visited the Fort Concho Museum Board in order to share the Buffalo Soldiers Project plan for the statue.

“We’re in preliminary states of getting support for a Buffalo Soldier Statue,” said Bell “there are town relatives of Buffalo Soldiers.”

Bob Bluthardt, site manager of Fort Concho agreed, stating that Fort Concho was generally 50 percent buffalo soldiers when it was in operation.

The location would be on the north side of town at Bryant and 12th Street.

Sue Mims explained the importance of the location as, “an area of town that is predominantly African-American,” meaning that the statue would have more meaning to the descendants of the Buffalo Soldiers stationed at Fort Concho.

The board was in general consensus that this effort would promote San Angelo and Fort Concho, and Bluthardt agreed to be staff liaison for the Buffalo Soldiers Project from the Fort Concho Museum Board.

As the project is still in the early stages, more information will be available at a later date.
