BIG SPRING, TX -- The Howard County Sheriff's are investigating a possible animal cruelty that occurred at the Happy Day Humane Society over the weekend.
According to the Midland Reporter Telegram, over the weekend contractors with Quintana & Sons Installers were installing kennel covers when a dog got out of the cage.
The dog, Zayne, was freely running around when the workers claim that he began to threatened them so they shot him.
No staff or volunteers were present during the incident but workers say that found multiple beer bottles in the trash cans.
“From my point of view, it was tragic,” said Kristen Partee, president of the Happy Day Humane Society’s board. “This was a horrible incident that we’d never foreseen happening.”
Partee continued by saying they’ve made changes to their policies in the wake of the tragedy, including no longer allowing contractors to do work on the premises without supervision.
“We thought Zayne was a sweet boy and he was never aggressive towards us,” she said. “Our staff is grieving after the loss of one of our friends.”
Partee said she did know the current status of HCSO’S investigation and did not know if any arrests had been made.
Parker said a report was filed with HCSO, but would not provide further details, citing the open investigation.

I sometimes held reservations about the TGCJ work crews who were assigned to our local shelter, but on the other hand, my more optimistic side wanted to think maybe some of the crew members would gain a little experience in compassion and empathy, as they worked around the animals.
In this instance, it sounds like a tragic accident, though it looks like the ball was dropped on both ends. Drunken contractors and the lack supervision by Humane Society handlers/staff-- bad mix.
