Bake Sales and GoFundMe Used to Rebuild North San Angelo Home

SAN ANGELO, TX — The challenge of homeowners in the Bradford Elementary area of San Angelo is many of these homes where handed down through the years and paid off. Mortgage companies and banks require insurance coverage for homes financed, but Insurance is not a priority for someone living on lower wages in homes with no mortgages and no insurance requirement.

A tornado unmasks this issue and we suddenly have many residents in need. That’s when neighbors, friends and family come together to solve the problem.

In the early morning of May 18, a tornado ripped through this area of San Angelo. One of the homes destroyed was at 1230 E. 24 ½ Street.

Homeowner Justine Acosta lost everything when the tornado ripped the roof from her home as she and her children huddled in the hallway. She has one son who was recently wheelchair-bound due to a broken leg. This was the most traumatic event of their lives, said family friend Lorene Stanley.

Stanley organized a bake sale, “But have unfortunately have not been able to attract much attention,” she said.

The bake sale will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday morning at Julio’s Burritos at 314 N. Bryant Blvd., just south of McDonald’s near the Houston Harte Expy. All proceeds go towards rebuilding Justine’s house on 24 1/2th Street.

Justine said this home is where she grew up, where she is was now raising her children, and eventually she plans to retire there.

They have labor but need to be able to purchase materials to finish the rebuilding of the home.

Contributions are accepted at The Bank of America, 337 W. Twohig Ave., as well as Go Fund Me here.
