NWS: Flood Advisory Through 4:30 p.m. and Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 7 p.m. Thursday

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for West Central Texas including Tom Green County until 7 p.m. Thursday.  

According to the NWS, severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, mainly along and south of a line from Sterling City to Brownwood.

The primary hazards will be large hail, damaging winds, and deadly lightning. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out as well.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain through Friday evening.  

Rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half inch are possible through Thursday evening in San Angelo.  

Sonora is under a flood advisory.  At 12:47 p.m. doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause minor flooding in the Sonora area.

Up to two inches of rain have already fallen and another inch or two is possible. Some locations that will experience flooding include Sonora, I-10 Near The Crockett- Sutton County Line, The Intersection Of US- 277 And Ranch Road 189, The Intersection of I- 10 And Ranch Road 1989 and The Intersection of Ranch Road 2596 and Ranch Road 864.

The NWS urges drivers to turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying spots.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

Be prepared for minor street flooding with the heavier storms. 

This is a developing weather situation.  

The NWS issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for the city of San Angelo and the surrounding area until 4:30 p.m. as a line of strong thunderstorms was developing from Sonora to Abilene.
