Petroleum Products: Egg Cartons

 

Styrofoam has many uses, but one most people can relate to every weekend morning is its use to make egg cartons.  Made from polystrene foam, Styrofoam is yet another product and packaging material made from petroleum.

Styrofoam was invented in 1941 by researchers at Dow’s Chemical Physics Lab. The artificial packing and insulating material is made of 98 percent air. The name Styrofoam is actually a trademarked name owned by Dow Manufacturing Company.

The company produces Styrofoam for various uses, including building materials, insulation and craft products.
