DPS Identifies the Dead in Horrific Head-on Crash Near Tankersley

SAN ANGELO, TX — One man lost his life in a head-on collision between two pickup trucks on U.S. 67 early this morning.

According to the Texas DPS, the driver of a 2018 Dodge Ram Pickup was traveling northeast towards San Angelo when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center stripe and struck a southwest-bound 2015 GMC Sierra pickup.

Both pickups were destroyed, from our observations at the scene. The Ram was almost facing the opposite direction in the center of the highway. The GMC was further south, off the north side of the roadway in the front yard of a residence.

DPS reported that the driver of the GMC was killed. They identified him as Rogelio M. Castellanos, 45, of San Angelo. Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard pronounced Castellanos dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ram pickup was Gustina Penna, 40, of Weatherford. He was rushed to Shannon Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.

The crash happened at 4:45 a.m. and U.S. 67 opened to one lane by 6:24 a.m. The highway wasn’t cleared until 9 a.m. According to the Texas DPS, the roadway was wet. The report states that the skies were clear, but our reporter at the scene observed a light mist and light fog.

The exact location of the crash was 100 yards southwest of the FM 2335 intersection in Tankersley on U.S. 67.
