Widespread Storm System Will Bring Freezing Rain and Snow to San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX -- A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of West Central Texas including the city of San Angelo from early Wednesday morning through 6 a.m. Thursday. 

 A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.

The National Weather Service office in San Angelo urges travelers to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

A cold front passed through West Central Texas early Tuesday bring cooler temperatures and forecasters say light to potentially moderate precipitation is expected over the northern half of the forecast area as the low moves east over the Big Country during the day Thursday.

Due to surface temperatures near or below freezing with a warm layer aloft late Tuesday night and Wednesday, precipitation looks likely to fall mostly in the form of freezing rain or drizzle although southern counties may warm up enough to see a regular cold rain transition during the day Wednesday, with potential ice accumulations of generally 0.05-0.10 inches.

The moist layer deepens and cools enough on Thursday as the core of the low approaches and moves through, that snow will be a good possibility across the Big Country Thursday, and possibly into the Concho Valley and Heartland as well.

Freezing rain expected. Ice accumulations of around five hundredths to a tenth of an inch possible Wednesday across the Concho Valley, Heartland, Northwest Hill Country and Northern Edwards Plateau counties.

Freezing rain or drizzle likely beginning after midnight Tuesday night and continuing through late Wednesday night. Ice will make for hazardous driving conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.

There is a 20 percent chance of precipitation Tuesday night with temperatures in the mid 20s and wind chill values in the teens.  On Wednesday, there is a 50 percent chance of freezing rain before noon then a chance of rain or freezing rain with temperatures in the mid 30s and wind chill values between 19 and 29 degrees.
