Suspect Arrested in Fatal Thanksgiving Eve Hit-and-Run

SAN ANGELO, TX — All afternoon, there were reports to us and radio traffic indicating an ongoing investigation by what appeared to be police traffic investigators.

A motorcycle police officer was witnessed on N. Howard St. in front of a residence with a gold or metallic-colored single cab GM pickup parked in the driveway. The truck appeared to match the description police gave last night of the hit-and-run suspect’s vehicle.

At around 6 p.m. a large contingent of police officers were summoned to Home Motors on Christoval Rd.

At 7:12 p.m., Clayton Dunn, 48, was booked into the Tom Green County Jail charged by the San Angelo police with Accident Involving Death. No bond was set as of 9 p.m.

Police confirmed Dunn was the suspect arrested for last night's hit-and-run at 10:05 p.m. Thursday night. 

At approximately 1 p.m. Thursday, a call was dispatched for a suspicious vehicle in the 900 block of Howard.  The caller stated she saw the social media posts about the hit and run and suspect vehicle and thought she saw the truck. 

After further investigation it was determined it was the suspect vehicle, a 2003 GMC 2500, which also matched description from last light. 

Dunn was charged after his interview with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, San Angelo police said.

Last night, a bicyclist was brutally run down and killed by a man driving what police said was a 1999-2005 GMC or Chevy pickup. After the bicyclist was struck, police said the bike was dragged about three blocks before becoming disentangled with the fleeing pickup.

Police sent us a picture and a short video of the suspect vehicle fleeing the scene in what could be the pickup witnessed on Howard St.

According to Texas law, immediately following an accident involving an injury or death, every person involved is required to stop and remain at the scene or return to the scene to await authorities. Failing to stop after an accident involving death is a second-degree felony in Texas . If convicted, the suspect faces a fine up to $10,000 and two to 20 years in prison.
