AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Christoval Keeps Unblemished Record with Dominant Win Over 6A Del Rio

 

CHRISTOVAL, TX-- The Christoval Lady Cougars have started the young 2018-19 season right where they left off last season after a dominant 47-36 win over Class 6A Del Rio on Monday.

The Lady Cougars had to fight early on, leading by just four points at 9-5 after the first quarter. Led by sophomore Gracie Jones' 11 points in the second, Christoval grew their lead to 24-18 entering halftime. Jones would finish with a team-high 19 points.

Christoval flexed their defensive strength in the third quarter by limiting the Del Rio Queens to just nine points while also scoring 14. The Lady Cougars also outscored Del Rio 9-8 in a more subdued fourth quarter. 

Along with Jones, Nicole Harper and Sterling Baker finished in double digit scoring. Harper had 12 points while Baker had 10.

Christoval (3-0) will travel to face state power Lipan at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Big Third Quarter Lifts Sonora to I-10 Sweep

The Sonora Lady Broncos also stayed undefeated on Monday with a 56-28 home win over the Ozona Lady Lions. On Saturday, Sonora beat Junction.

The first two quarters almost mirrored each other with Sonora outscoring Ozona 12-8 and 13-8 for a 25-16 lead at the half. Sonora then exploded for 21 points in the third quarter while limiting Ozona to just three points. The Lady Broncos cruised from there.

All-Concho Valley volleyball MVP Mary Kyle Johnson was the sparkplug of Sonora's offense with a team-high 16 points. She was the only Lady Bronco in double digits. Johnson also had eight rebounds and seven assists.

Raeven Harris and Skylar Harris were tied for second on the team with nine points. Karah Martinez and Brae Harris each posted seven points.

Brae finished with a team-high nine rebounds and seven steals as well. Martinez and Skylar Harris each had seven steals as well.

Sonora (3-0) will travel to Eldorado on Tuesday. Ozona (0-3) will travel to Grape Creek next Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Class 4A No. 1 Levelland Hands Lady Cats First Loss

The Central Lady Cats ran into a good Levelland Lady Lobo team on Monday and found out why they are the no. 1-ranked team in Class 4A.

Central was within four points of the Lady Loboes at 21-17 entering the second half. Levelland proceeded to outscore Central 15-3 in the third quarter and never looked back for a 47-26 result. It was Central's first loss of the season.

Parris Parmer led Central's offense with 10 points. Six of those 10 came from three pointers.

Layla Young was second on the team with eight points. Victoria Lopez had a pair of three pointers for six points on the night.

Central (8-1) will travel to Big Spring on Tuesday for their final game before the Thanksgiving break.
