SAN ANGELO, TX -- Statewide Democratic candidates Justin Nelson and Kim Olson campaigned in San Angelo Tuesday at Tom Green County Democratic Party headquarters downtown during a statewide campaign trip.
No Democrat has won a statewide office since 1994. Nelson is the Democratic Party nominee for Texas Attorney General. Olson is the Party’s nominee for Agriculture Commissioner.Nelson was recently endorsed by the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle. In their anybody-but-a-Republican endorsement, the board said, “Nelson probably can’t win without some crossover support from Republicans.”
Nelson spent most of his time Tuesday speaking before a handful of faithful San Angelo Democrats attacking his Republican incumbent opponent, Ken Paxton.
“We are going around the state of Texas talking about why it is so important to vote for the best people for the job regardless of party.” Said Nelson, appealing to anyone outside the Democrat Party.
Nelson attacked Texas Attorney General Paxton. “Nobody is above the law. Not the President of the United States and not the Texas Attorney General.” said Nelson. “It’s an embarrassment. It’s a disgrace. Think about this; he is the very first person in Texas history to run for re-election while indicted to a statewide office. Ever. He’s the chief lawyer for the state of Texas and he can’t serve on a jury? He’s the chief law enforcement officer for the state of Texas and he can’t own a gun? How embarrassing is that?”
In the United States, individuals are innocent until proven guilty. Paxton has been indicted, not convicted. He can still own a gun and serve on a jury.
Nelson told supporters he was born and raised in Houston. He is now endorsed by his hometown newspaper.
Kim Olson is a former United States Air Force Pilot and third generation farmer.
Olson says too many Texas Children are going hungry. “We feed three million children every day with free and reduced lunch. We should pat ourselves on the back for that. But here’s the deal. What happens in the summertime? What happens on the weekend? I’ll tell you. One in every four children goes to bed hungry. In the second largest economy in America we are sending our babies home hungry. That’s not a red issue or a blue issue its a red white and blue issue that we feed our Texas children.”
Olson continued, “I’ve been to 225 of the 254 counties in Texas. I’m chasing Beto!” Democrat U.S. Senator candidate Beto O’Rourke has visited all 254 counties in Texas. “Here’s what I’ve found. We’re more alike than we are different. We’re concerned about the same issues. And when there’s a drought out there it’s a drought for Democrats and Republicans.”
“This used to be the friendship state. I think we can be that again.” said Olson.
Olson was recently endorsed by the editorial board of the San Antonio Express News. In its endorsement, newspaper board said, “Olson does have one significant blemish on her résumé. In the mid-2000s, while in Iraq, she was accused of steering government contracts to a South African security firm. Olson denied the charges, but pleaded guilty to creating the appearance of a conflict of interest and was hit with a $3,500 fine. She said she agreed to this because the military had more resources than she did.”
Kim Olson pleaded guilty to a crime in a military court and paid a fine.
She is traveling the state campaigning with the Democratic party’s nominee for Attorney General, the Democrat who wants to be the state’s top lawyer, who is accusing his opponent of not being fit for office for being indicted, not convicted and not found guilty, of a crime.
Nelson and Olson stopped in six other Texas cities before making their way to San Angelo. According to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll released in June, incumbent Republican Ken Paxton was at 32 percent while Democratic nominee Justin Nelson was at 31 percent. Libertarian candidate Michael Harris had six percent and 30 percent were undecided.
There is no reliable polling information in the race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.
Like all statewide races in Texas the contest for Texas Attorney General and Texas Agriculture Commissioner are far eclipsed by the race for Junior United States Senator between El Paso Democrat Beto O’Rourke and Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.
Despite O’Rourke’s fundraising and appearances with the likes of country music legend Willie Nelson, O’Rourke trails Cruz by nine points in the latest poll.
Election day is Nov. 6. Early voting begins next week, Oct. 22 and runs through Nov. 2
