San Angelo ISD Responds to Hummingbird's Arrest

SAN ANGELO, TX-- San Angelo ISD has responded to arrest of Matthew Hummingbird, who was arrested for an improper relationship between an educator and student, a second degree felony, last Thursday.

"Mr. Hummingbird was a long-term substitute at Lake View High School in the 2016-2017 school year until February 2017," San Angelo ISD Director of Communications Derrick Jackson said in a statement.

Hummingbird was accused of sleeping with a 17-year-old Reagan County High School student twice between January and March of 2018.

That same day, Hummingbird admitted to Reagan Sheriff's Captain Jason McGhee that he slept with a Lake View High School student at a San Angelo hotel on New Years 2017.

"In accordance with Board Policy DHE (LEGAL), the district follows strict protocols when it receives allegations of impropriety for any employee," the statement read. "Protocols include notifying legal authorities and the Texas Education Agency."

While substitute teaching at Lake View, Hummingbird was also an assistant for the Maiden basketball team. At Reagan County, Hummingbird was also a girls basketball coach.

At the time of his arrest, Hummingbird was teacher at Kermit Junior High School and the quarterbacks coach for their high school football team.
