WALL, TX-- The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office say they have arrested the man they believe tried to impersonate a Peace Officer in order to get female Wall High School students to pull over.
Troy Lance Lankford, 27, of San Angelo, was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, and charged with impersonating a public servant, a third degree felony in the State of Texas.
According to an affidavit, on Aug. 1, 2018, Lankford drove "at a high rate of speed and slowed to drive" alongside the victim's car on US Highway 87 going to Wall High School with four passengers, three of which were female. Lankford is accused of "flashing" a circular badge with a "V" in a middle at the car and pointed his index finger as a gesture to tell the car to pull over.
Lankford then pulled his dark Ford F150 behind the victim's vehicle and "began flashing his headlamp on and off in an attempt to pull her over," the affidavit says.
Witnesses in the car said the driver was not sure if Lankford was a peace officer, so she sped up to get away.
The Sheriff's Office interviewed Lankford. He admitted he is the only one who drives the truck with that license plate and that he was the one "depicted in the photograph" the Sheriff's Office obtained. He also admitted to having a circular coin similar to the one the victims said they saw.
The Sheriff's Office photographed Lankford's wallet where the coin was held. The "V" was positively identified by two of the witnesses.
Lankford was released from the Tom Green County Jail at 1:43 p.m. after posting his $10,000 bail.
This was Lankford's eighth arrest.
