HOUSTON, TX -- Houston’s Memorial Hermann Health System and Baylor Scott & White Health signed a letter of intent to merge Friday and publically announced the merger Monday.
The New company would become the largest health system in Texas.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the mega-health system would serve patients in 30 counties and employ approximately 73,000 people.
Scott & White merged with Baylor back in 2013 and now has 48 hospitals and is the state’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system.
Memorial Hermann has 19 hospitals mostly in the Houston area.
Memorial President and CEO Chuck Stokes said Monday, “This is an opportunity for two progressive, like-minded organizations, who do similar service, to come together and provide a better model of health care.”
Each system will use their current names in their respective markets but the new company will have a new name.
Baylor Scott & White and Memorial Hermann hope to have an agreement signed by the spring and be operational by July 1, 2019.
