EL PASO, TX -- A desperate Beto O'Rourke is ignoring a golden opportunity to take advantage of the first of three debates with Republican rival Ted Cruz and has set his sites on the Rio Grande Valley seeking help from regional Democrat darlings Julian and Joaquin Castro.
The O'Rourke campaign is already spinning the results of the planned Friday night debate with Cruz. Within hours of his first debate, El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke will hit the road to continue campaign for the U.S. Senate with a return to Webb, Hidalgo and Cameron Counties.
According to a press release from his campaign, O'Rourke will hold public events in Laredo, Edinburg and Brownsville this weekend with special guests, former Secretary Julián Castro and Congressman Joaquin Castro.
These events follow O’Rourke’s travels to all 254 counties of Texas and his most recent 34-day, 7,000 mile grassroots drive across the state, as he continues to lead open dialogues with Republicans, Democrats, Independents and non-voters alike
The return to the border follows O’Rourke’s announcement that his grassroots campaign raised more than $10.4 million in the second quarter of 2018 without taking a dime from PACs or special interests.
This was more than two times what Ted Cruz raised in the same period. While bringing in more than 215,000 contributions, O’Rourke has now outraised Cruz in five FEC reporting periods.
Recent polling has shown the race tightening and regularly within the margin of error. A new Reuters, Ipsos and University of Virginia Center for Politics survey out yesterday finds O'Rourke leading Cruz by two points among likely voters.
the latest Quinnipiac University poll shows Cruz up over O’Rourke by nine points among likely voters.
