Threat of Heavy Rainfall Prompts Flash Flood Watch

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued a Flash Flood Watch for a portion of west central Texas, including the following areas, Brown, Callahan, Coke, Coleman, Concho, Fisher, Haskell, Irion, Jones, Nolan, Runnels, Shackelford, Sterling, Taylor, Throckmorton, and Tom Green  from Friday morning through sunrise Saturday morning.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight will become more widespread across the area for Friday and Friday night. Rainfall totals of two to three inches will be common, with higher totals in excess of 4 inches likely in a few locations. This heavier rain will fall on saturated soils from recent rainfall and increase the potential for flash flooding.

Heavy rainfall will lead to rapid runoff that may result in flooding of low water crossings and city streets. Creeks and streams will fill with swiftly flowing water.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

The remnants of a tropical system from the Pacific will move into West Central Texas today from northwestern Mexico and forecasters are calling for heavy rain which could cause flooding across the area Friday and Saturday.

According to the NWS, moisture will increase, with precipitable water values rising from 1 to 1.5 inches this morning to between 1.5 and 2 inches tonight.

Forecasters say that will all combine to give at least a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms by this afternoon across most of the area with the highest chances for south/southwestern counties.

As the main trough moves toward our area from the west tonight, precipitation chances continue to increase, with the highest chances west of an Abilene to Ozona line tonight.

Although severe weather is not expected, locally heavy rainfall and flooding will be possible, as well as dangerous lightning.

Scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms will be likely Friday through Saturday, then decreasing on Sunday.

The primary hazard will be locally heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding.

There's a 50 percent chance of rain tonight and a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms with heavy rain on Friday. 

The rain chance for Saturday is 50 percent and temperatures will drop to the mid 60s Friday night and will be in the lower 70s Saturday.
