New West Texas Collection Exhibit on Nursing History in Region Opens Sept. 25

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University’s West Texas Collection will host a special opening event for its new exhibit, “Healing Touch: A History of Nursing Education in West Texas,” on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The exhibit opening will be held in conjunction with the 2018 annual meeting of the ASU Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection in the West Texas Collection Gallery on the second floor of the University Center. The exhibit includes:

  • Numerous historical and modern photos
  • An early training mannequin
  • Nursing uniforms and pins
  • Examples of early medical equipment

The Friends of the Library board will introduce new members before turning the program over to Dr. Leslie Mayrand, dean of ASU’s Archer College of Health and Human Services, to open the new exhibit. ASU nursing faculty members will then give guided tours of ASU’s new Health and Human Services Building.

Since 1910, San Angelo has been home to a variety of nursing education programs. From initial hospital-based diploma programs to today’s use of high-fidelity simulation as a teaching tool, the history of nursing education in West Texas is rich. The Friends of the Library and West Texas Collection celebrate that history in this latest exhibit.

“Healing Touch: A History of Nursing Education in West Texas” will remain open for free public viewing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays throughout the fall 2018 semester.
