Future of Recycling in San Angelo in Jeopardy

SAN ANGELO, TX -- (Press Release) Citizen input on the future of recycling in San Angelo will be sought at a series of three town hall forums throughout the community. The public gatherings will begin at 6 p.m. on:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Drive.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Southland Baptist Church, 4300 Meadow Creek Trail.
  • Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Lincoln Middle School cafeteria, 255 Lake View Heroes Drive.

Representatives from the City of San Angelo and from Republic Services, the City’s contracted trash collection provider, will be on hand at each meeting to hear the public’s thoughts and to answer questions.

The Sept. 26 forum will be streamed live on SATV, Suddenlink channel 17, and on the City of San Angelo-Public Information Facebook page. Questions and comments posted on the City’s Facebook and Twitter (@CityofSanAngelo) pages will be incorporated into the discussion. SATV will later rebroadcast the forum.

The City will also conduct a survey on local attitudes about recycling and its future.

Republic Services on Sept. 4 asked the City Council to consider changes in the curbside recycling program. Republic officials say changes are necessitated by China’s refusal to accept recyclable materials from other countries. That has caused a global crash in the price of recycled materials and an unforeseen change worldwide in the recycling industry.

Among the options Republic has offered are to temporarily suspend the marketing of recyclables collected at curbsides; changing the materials that are accepted; changing service levels, perhaps by adding drop-off sites; or moving to a subscription service for those interested in recycling.

First we were ordered into this recycling situation, Then it was modified from every week collection to once every two weeks, Then we are charged extra each month because the amount of recyclable material doesn't meet required tonnage .
SAFE is shut down because they can't pay insurance premiums. Glass recycling was supposed to be picked up by another outfit, which never happened. And now Republic , sitting there with a big , fat 10 year contract under its belt, thanks to good old boy Morrison and crew, now Republic puts forth the options of changing service levels(whatever that means), moving to s a subscription service (pay more for what we are paying for now) and so on and on and on. Why not just cancel out Republic if they can't live up to their contract, and start the bidding process over again? JUST A FEW THOGHTS
