Heavily Armed Police Descend on East San Angelo Home After Reports of a Shooting

SAN ANGELO, TX — UPDATED 5:10 p.m. San Angelo police are armed with long rifles in the 300 block of N. Schroeder St. possibly searching for a gunman.

At Shannon Medical Center emergency room, our reporter on the scene there received an unconfirmed report about the presence of a two-year-old gunshot victim. Details are sketchy.

Meanwhile, at the Stripes at the intersection of Pulliam St. and Schroeder, what appears to be a gathering of force is happening at 4:40 p.m.

Unconfirmed reports are that the suspect, described as a Hispanic male, who shot the toddler, is on the run and considered armed and dangerous.

Schroeder St. is blocked.

Update 5:10 p.m.

Spokesman Sgt. Matthew Vaughn said the investigation is unfolding rapidly regarding a “young child” who was taken to Shannon Medical Center’s ER with a gunshot wound.

He said multiple police investigators are working multiple locations, so getting concise information back to him on the public affairs side has been difficult because everything is unfolding rapidly.

The person police are seeking is not termed a suspect, Vaughn said. “He is a person of interest. We don’t know what role he played in this. We don’t know if he is a suspect or a witness,” Vaughn said.

Information gathered at the Shannon ER indicated that the incident “may have occurred here,” Vaughn said, referring to a house in the 300 block of N. Schroeder.

Vaughn did not know if the person of interest was armed and dangerous. Although police presence with long guns and bulletproof vests indicates police aren’t taking chances.

Vaughn stressed that police are going to enter the home “legally and safely” and that may indicate police are waiting on obtaining a search warrant before making a forced entry.

Vaughn said he did not know the exact age of the child victim, and referred to the victim only as a “young child.”

Update 5:33 p.m.

A San Angelo police SWAT squad busted down the door and entered the residence purportedly searching for a person of interest. Police later stated they were not required to bust down the door, but they made entry.

Update 6:30 p.m.

Police forced entry into the home in the 300 block of N. Schroeder on the east side of San Angelo at about 5:30 p.m. According to police spokesman Sgt. Matt Vaughn, the home was empty.

Subsequently to entering the home, Vaughn said police found the person of interest. No further details were revealed.

Police will be at the Schroeder residence into the evening as the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) processes the scene.

“We are confident there is no threat to the public,” Vaughn said.

Later tonight, Vaughn promised more details will be released.

9:14 p.m.

San Angelo police released a statement saying no arrests have been made but that this incident remains an active investigation.
