SAN MARCOS, TX-- Authorities with the San Marcos Fire Department’s Hazmat Unit and Hays County Narcotics Task Force dismantled a portable meth lab at an abandoned Burger King on Sunday.
A City of San Marcos press release said authorities were responding to a suspicious person call at the Burger King on I-35 around 2 p.m.
San Marcos Police were first on scene and found a backpack with several containers inside at the transient camp. One of those containers reportedly contained an acidic powder which made contact with an officer’s skin, giving him a minor burn. He was treated and released by EMS.
After detectives arrived, they recognized the material was conducive to a clandestine methamphetamine lab.
Police called the hazmat unit and the task force to dismantle the lab and make the area safe. According to the release, a third-party hazmat unit was called to dispose of the material.
Authorities said the area was safe at 10 p.m.
