SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Smiling Moose Deli will close its Sherwood Way doors at 3 p.m. today and won't re-open.
General Manager Shellye Terrell told San Angelo LIVE! there were multiple factors into the shutting down of the popular sandwich shop.
Terrell said the leasing company wanted $1,000 more in rent, which Terrell said was "unreasonable." Terrell also said the abundance of new restaurants affected patronage at the deli, but she still loves her "loyal customers." Terrell is also engaged and plans to move to Hobbs, NM, which also affected her plans for the deli.
Shellye said the call to shut the business down came on Wednesday night.
"Wednesday was a great day. We were business building all day," Terrell said. "Thursday was different. We were closing. Things were packed up in the back [of the store]. We didn't do any prep this morning and we always do."
Smiling Moose has been in San Angelo since 2012.
Terrell said she has reached out to other businesses to give recommendations for her staff so they can stay employed.
Until Smiling Moose closes today at 3 p.m., customers can get two sandwiches "buy one, get one free".
