Multiple Agencies Tame Multiple Grass Fires in Howard County

BIG SPRING, TX-- Multiple agencies were called to multiple grass fires that sparked near Big Spring on Monday.

The Big Spring Police Department said the first fire near Ratliff Road had been burning since 12:40 p.m. on Monday. The second fire in the area of West FM 700 was called in around 3:04 p.m.

The two fires burned an estimated 200 acres, according to News West 9.

The Texas A&M Forest Service, Big Spring Police, Big Spring Fire and EMS, Midland County Fire Department, Glasscock County and the Howard County Sheriff's Office responded with the help of a plethora of divisions within Big Spring PD.

Those first responders were able to surround the fires swiftly and contain it without the loss of any structure. A firefighter and a civilian had to be treated for heat exhaustion.

The fires shut down roads in the surrounding area and Big Spring ISD was forced to release students early during the wildfires. According to Oncor, the fire left 4,514 people without power.
