Banged-Up, Disheveled Man Appears on Jail Logs Following Friday Night's Fatal Crash During Police Chase

SAN ANGELO, TX — A banged-up, disheveled 22-year-old young man’s photo appeared on the jail roster Saturday afternoon. He is charged with evading arrest or detention in a vehicle and causing death doing so. His bond is set at $30,000.

Last night, police chased a Ram 1500 pickup through town. The truck, eastbound on W. Concho Ave., ran the red light at S. Abe St. and crashed into a Chevy Equinox driven by an 83-year-old woman. The woman was miraculously not injured, but one passenger inside the Ram with the now-banged-up prisoner was killed. After striking the Equinox, the truck hit a pole that held up the signal light and that appeared to be what caused the death.

The signal lights are still inoperative. The City of San Angelo said the intersection of Abe and Concho will be controlled by a four-way stop sign until the traffic lights are repaired. Abe St. is maintained by TxDOT.

Police didn’t provide details of how the high-speed pursuit originated last night. They only revealed that the folks in the truck were involved in “illegal activity.” When police attempted to perform a traffic stop on the truck, the driver disregarded the police and the chase began.

Initial reports indicate there were four individuals in that fleeing Ram 1500, including Diaz. One of the passengers died. A witness at the crash scene said that police pulled the driver out and threw him to the ground. A passenger, also pulled out at about the same time, appeared to be pasty white and unresponsive.

Since the San Angelo Police Department was involved in the crash, though no police assets (like cars) were damaged, the Texas Department of Public Safety has taken over the crash investigation to ensure impartiality. All four occupants were transported to Shannon Medical Center.

The jail logs identify the 22-year-old man’s name as Daniel Nakeia Diaz. He was booked into the jail at 2:10 a.m. This was the first and only arrest record on Diaz in Tom Green County, according to the jail records.

Remember the days of newspapers that you couldn't comment on? Everyone's opinion is so important now. Why?

There was a forum for opinions in the old papers, called letters to the editor. No doubt the screening process was more rigorous, and much slower, and anonymity was out of the question. If folks had to reveal their true identity in order to post, I suspect there would be much less inflammatory rhetoric. Just be sure you don't insult any sandwich shops.......
