Hobbs Police in San Angelo to Interview Man Captured During Sunday SWAT Standoff

SAN ANGELO, TX — Hobbs, New Mexico police investigators were in San Angelo Sunday interviewing Jose Angel Baeza in connection with the homicide investigation of the shooting death of a 29-year-old Yvonne Villalobos in Hobbs.

Baeza, 35, of Hobbs, is in the Tom Green County Jail.

According to Hobbs police, Baeza was a person of interest in the homicide investigation of Villalobos’ death.

Baeza was staying in an abandoned building in in the 300 block of 45th St. in San Angelo. Sunday, acting on a tip, San Angelo police surrounded the house and apprehended Baeza after a standoff with SWAT that lasted all moring long. He was arrested without a shot fired at 11:34 a.m. and charged with felon in possession of a firearrm.

After the Hobbs PD interview with Baeza in San Angelo, he was re-arrested on charges not related with the Hobbs homicide. Jail records show him still in the Tom Green County Jail on charges of Fugitive from Justice.

Initially, Baeza was one of two persons of interest in Hobbs PD’s homicide investigation. The other man still being sought is Jose Acosta, 36, of Hobbs.

On Sunday, Hobbs detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Acosta that charged him with three felonies and one misdemeanor, including Involuntary Manslaughter, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Tampering with Evidence, and Misdemeanor Negligent use of a Deadly Weapon.

Monday, a third person was arrested. Hobbs nabbed Damieon Banks, 39, of Hobbs and, in connection with Villalobos’ death, he was charged with Accessory to wit: Tampering with Evidence (4th Degree Felony); Harboring or Aiding a Felon (4th Degree Felony).

Acosta remains at-large.
