SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Central Lady 'Cats finished Monday with their unblemished district record in tact following an 8-3 win over the Killeen Lady 'Roos.
Killeen opened the scoring by putting up three runs against freshman Ashton McMillan in the first. McMillan would strikeout three batters in the inning with one reaching on a dropped third strike.
Central would capitalize on errors and bad pitching from Killeen to send 11 batters to the plate and score six in the bottom of the first.
"This bunch, they're going to score runs," Central Head Coach David Millsap said of his team's ability to produce runs. "We're confident in that and these girls are showing confidence at the plate."
The scoring quieted over the next few frames and McMillan went to work striking out four of the next eight batters she faced. Fellow freshman Bailey Fulps would relieve McMillan in the fourth inning.
"I was happy to see the six runs on the board," McMillan said of the run support. "I knew our bats would help us out."
Fulps picked up where Ashton left off and retired 12 of the final 14 batters in the ballgame, six of which came from strikeouts, to earn the winning decision.
"[Ashton and Bailey] can fire it," Millsap said. "[Other teams] aren't going to rock us, by any means. I've got all the confidence in the world in these girls. They have grown so much. In the beginning of the year, they thought they could just throw it by somebody. Now..they're starting to hit spots. They're starting to become pitchers rather than throwers."
McMillan allowed three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Fulps allowed just two hits to go with her six Ks.
Sydnie Gilbert's day at the plate mirrored McMillan's exactly.
The Lady 'Cats improve to 8-3-2 overall and 4-0 in District 8-6A with a five game win streak. Central will face Belton on the road Tuesday at 4 p.m.
