Fort Concho Hosts 2 Living History Training Programs

SAN ANGELO, TX -- (Press Release) Fort Concho this weekend hosts two living history training programs to which the public is invited as guests or participants.

The Ladies Living History Symposium will cover the life of women on the western frontier. Sessions on clothing, food and interpretation techniques will help volunteers better tell the story of women who shared hardships with the soldiers at Texas military posts in the 1800s.

To register for the full course, which starts Friday, March 9, and ends at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 11, contact Sharon Baird at 325-338-2149 or at [email protected]. The cost for the entire course, including meals, is $45.

The public is welcome to visit, at no charge, the crochet stitching class from 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Friday, the artisan bazaar from 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and the Ladies Tea at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. All events will be in the fort’s Officers’ Quarters 8 and the Chapel.

The School of the Piece will cover all the required training for the safe firing of all types of late-1800s artillery pieces, including cannons, howitzers and mortars. Living history volunteers can register by contacting event coordinator Ray Johnson at 325-642-8853 or [email protected].

The cost for the entire course, which begins Friday evening, March 9, is $45 and includes all materials and meals until midday Sunday, March 11. The public is welcome to watch the on-field non-firing practices Saturday afternoon and the firing of the pieces Sunday morning.
