Odessa House Fire Victim has been Identified

ODESSA, TX — UPDATE: The woman who was killed in the Sunday morning house fire was an elementary school teacher.

According to the City of Odessa report, Vickie Watson, 57, was in the house Sunday morning when it caught fire.

ECISD says that Watson was a fourth-grade teacher at Blackshear Elementary School, and she will be missed greatly.

No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Detectives and crime scene investigators remained at the Odessa home all day Sunday after a woman was found dead inside a home that had caught fire.

Neighbors were awakened by the sound of sirens and started to gather around the northeast Odessa just after 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

“I was on the phone with 911 because we were really thought it was gunshots outside because it was like a pop, and the pop, pop, pop,” explained neighbor, Dana Humphries.

Upon arrival of the Fire Department, two of the three occupants were able to escape the blaze. Neighbors told CBS7 that the woman who occupied the home near Springdale and Tanglewood did not make it out of the home in time.

Two officers tried to rescue the third occupant but they suffered smoke inhalation and they were treated. All efforts to rescue the third occupant were foiled because of a large amount of smoke engulfing the home.

It is believed that at least one of the dogs living in the home didn’t make it out.

Neighbors were told to evacuate their homes.

One other home also suffered some damage from the fire. The investigation into what caused the fire is still underway.
