Tom Green County Commissioners May Stall Courthouse Remodel Plans

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Overdue renovations to the Tom Green County Courthouse may be put on hold Tuesday as Commissioners consider ending negotiations for construction manager at risk and rejecting all bids for the project.

The courthouse hasn’t been updated since the 1980’s and there are now six courts functioning in space that was designed for three.  According to the agenda Commissioners will, “Consider ending negotiations with Phoenix 1 Restoration for RFP 17-008 "Courthouse Construction Manager at Risk" and reject all bids.”

In a story we ran in October 2016, Judge Steve Floyd spoke of this project being a necessity since the growth of all the courts that Tom Green currently handles.

“What we essentially have is a 1928 structure that hasn’t had any remodeling done since 1980,” Judge Floyd said. “It was designed originally for two district courts and a county commissioner’s court. Currently, there are four district courts, a title four master (child support judge), and a cluster court for CPS cases.”

In total there are six courts, he noted.

Judge Floyd mentioned this will be a multi-phase project, and $3.5 million dollars have been allocated for renovating efforts. This funding will cover the capacity issues, functionalities, and also updates to the Master Plan for the previously mentioned restoration effort.

Also on Tuesday, Commissioners are set to reject all bids for a Prisoner Transport Van due to non-conformance with bid specifications.  The court is set to reissue the bid with revised specifications.

Commissioners also will consider accepting a grant from the Governor’s office for capital murder trial expenses and consider supporting a resolution to host the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Annual Conference in San Angelo in 2020.

The Tom Green County Commissioners’ Court meets in regular session at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Commissioner’s Courtroom on the second floor of the Keyes Building, 113 W. Beauregard.
