Young Christoval Ladies Show Maturity in Area Round Win

GARDEN CITY, TX— The Lady Cougars are Class 2A Region I Area Champions after a strong second half by Christoval propelled the Lady Cougars to 48-33 victory over the Tahoka Bulldogs.

“I think we focused in on their best player Stice,” said Lady Cougar Head Coach Scott Richardson. “We made sure she didn't beat us. Once we slowed her down it really hurt them scoring.”

Tahoka came out of the gate with an early lead behind the sharpshooting of Natalie Stice who scored 11 of her 22 total points in the first quarter.

After trailing 14-11 after the first quarter the Lady Cougars evened the score at 23 going into the half.

With halftime adjustments the Lady Cougars clamped down on defense in the third shutting down Stice who went scoreless in the quarter.

Tahoka looked confused and could not get anything going without Stice as Christoval took a 35-28 lead going into the final quarter.

Christoval impressive defense continued into the final quarter as they were limited Slice to only five points, the only Bulldog to score in the quarter.

Graci Jones and Kayce Jackson led the Lady Cougars scoring 33 of Christoval’s 48 total points.

Tahoka’s frustration boiled over in the final minutes with multiple technical fouls being called on the Bulldogs.

Although Tahoka lost their cool, the Lady Cougars and their coach kept a level head and, as time expired, the Lady Cougars stormed center court where they held their trophy high, while Tahoka walked off in disappointment.

Richardson looked excited following the game and stated, “Every game for us if fun. We start four Freshman. So, just these young kids getting more and more experience is exciting for us. It’s survive right now and we survived.”

Christoval will look to survive again next week against an impressive Sundown (24-6) team that just beat Winters 45-23 and finished undefeated in district play.
