SAN ANGELO, TX-- A strong first half by Lake View was erased tonight as Lubbock Cooper dominated in the second half to beat the Chiefs by a score of 86-61.
"They started hitting from the outside and we stopped hitting from the outside," Lake View Head Coach Courtney Bliskey said. "We tried to force it too much into the interior with our dribbling as opposed to with our passing. So, we kind of got away from what we did in the first half."
Lubbock Cooper put pressure on Lake view throughout the first quarter, but good ball movement by the chiefs allowed to move the ball through the Pirate press.
After trading buckets in the first quarter the Chiefs took a 16-14 lead into the second quarter after drilling two threes in the closing minutes.
The Pirates seemed to slow down in the second as they pulled back from their full court press, allowing the Chiefs move up court with ease.
Ahmad Daniels sank a big three to put Lake View up three with 3:05 left in the first half, but the Pirates managed to close with half with a 29-29 tie.
Lubbock Cooper's Kade Johnston came out scorching hot in the second half draining consecutive threes and led the Pirates with 11 of their 22 third quarter points.
Johnston's barrage from downtown, coupled with a Chiefs team that began to look exhausted, propelled the Pirates to a double digit lead going into the fourth, 51-40.
In the fourth, the Chiefs kept pressing on offense, but could not find any answers to cut their deficit.
Although the Chiefs kept fighting, Lubbock Cooper continued their strong play in the fourth winning the game 86-61.
Lake View's (5-24, 1-7) next Boys Varsity Basketball game will be away at Lubbock Coronado on Friday 2/9 at 7:30pm.
