Texas Rangers Investigating Fatal Officer Involved Shooting in Runnels County

WINTERS, TX -- Texas Rangers and the Department of Public Safety are investigating a fatal shooting north of Winters on Friday.  

According to information from the Runnels County Sheriff’s office, the unidentified man shot a rifle inside a house on FM 2405.  Winters Police and Runnels County Sheriff’s Deputies responded a call about a man believed to be in mental distress.  

Officers arrived on the scene and attempted to talk to the suspect.  According to reports, they were unable to establish communication with the suspect.  At one point, the suspect pointed the rifle at officers through a window.  

Officers called in the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office which brought in a swat team and negotiator.  

The man reportedly walked out of the house and pointed the rifle at officers.  They fired one shot at the suspect who was killed instantly.  

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to Mesquite, TX for an autopsy.
