$9,300 Donated to 3 Local Charities from Cooking for Christ's Annual Thanksgiving Turkey and Ham Sale

SAN ANGELO, TX — The proceeds from last Thanksgiving’s turkey and ham sale at Blaine’s Pub were given to three San Angelo charities Wednesday.

The annual Thanksgiving turkey and ham sale is a tradition for the informal group of barbecue specialists called Cooking for Christ. The organization dedicates its time, and the use of the members’ armada of elaborate smoking and cooking equipment, to local fundraisers and what they call “benefits” for San Angeloans in need.

Every year, the cooking group forms a dozen or so smokers on the empty lot next to Blaine’s and cooks turkeys and hams for purchase. All of the profits for the event are donated to charity.

This year, three local charities received $3,100 each totaling $9,300, from the Thanksgiving turkey and ham sale.

Receiving a check on behalf of Meals for the Elderly was board member Chase Bruton. Meals for the Elderly provides daily meals to elderly San Angelo citizens, helping them stay in their homes until later in life.

The Wesley Trinity Daily Bread, a Soup Kitchen, is an organization that provides free meals to the area’s poor and homeless. It received a $3,100 donation. Accepting it were Pamela Burke and Ola McCorkle.

Sonny Dooley and Maria Mejia accepted a check on behalf of Concho Valley Turning Point. This non-profit Christian ministry offers Bible studies, facilitates self-help groups, and operates a transitional living facility for men.
