SAN ANGELO, TX — If you like championship level barbecue brisket, you’ll love the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo’s 8th annual Championship Cook-Off Saturday.
The competition has moved from south of the Spur Arena to north of the Spur according to Rodeo Director of Operations Kermit Wendland. The move is to accommodate the larger crowds expected this year.
The cook-off includes brisket which is mandatory, pork spare ribs, chicken and jalapeno poppers. According to the SASSR website, the “San Angelo King Popper” title is up for grabs. The popper division was started in 2012, since poppers are a West Texas delicacy. Belt buckles will be awarded to the four person team that wins each division, Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion plaques will be awarded to the sponsors of the winners. A point system will be used to determine Grand and Reserve Grand Champions.
Spectators are invited to visit the cook-off area and sample a variety of offerings from the teams entered. Donation jars are set-up at each of the pits, and the team with the most donations receives free entry to the event the following year. All donations benefit the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation fund.
Jalapeno Poppers are due at 11 a.m. Saturday, then chicken is due at noon, pork spare ribs will be turned in by 1:00 p.m. and brisket is due at 2:00 p.m. The cook-off is sponsored by the San Angelo Restaurant Association.
