Central's Minix sinks Game-Winner over Copperas Cove

SAN ANGELO, TX- Devereaux Minix saved his best shot of the night for last, knocking down the game winning three-pointer as time expired in Central's 70-68 victory over Copperas Cover Tuesday night.

"That's pretty much exactly how we drew it up in the time out," said Central High School Head Coach Dustin Faught. "We wanted to catch the ball off a banana cut, moving towards our basket where we have momentum."

Those in attendance were visibly frustrated after a bucket by Copperas Cove put the Dawgs up by one with five seconds left, but a well drawn up play by the Bobcats coaching staff led to the Minix buzzer beater.

It wasn't the Minneapolis Miracle, but don't tell that to fans that attended the game who witnessed Minix sink the final shot.

Coach Faught showed high praise for Minix as well stating "That's the kid shooting the ball with the game on the line that you want right there. Best perimeter shooter we got."

Minix was impressive as he finished with seven three-pointers and a team high 21 points for the Bobcats.

When speaking on the final play Minix said "We saw great execution from our teammates. My teammate Michael Bonner had a good shot, but he passed it to me for an even better shot."

This may be a turning point in the season for a Central team that was just beaten by this same Copperas Cover team a month ago 104-73.

Although Central started off slow on defense by allowing 27 points in the first quarter, the Bobcat squad clamped down and only allowed 41 points over the final three quarters.

"I thought we just started doing a better job of staying down, that first quarter we were jumpy" said Coach Faught. "We were jumping ourselves out of position. Going for steals and taking ourselves out of position, and they were capitalizing on it."

Duriell Taylor added an explosive play of his own on the only dunk of the night that added to his 16 total points.

The Bobcats will look to keep momentum on their side in a home matchup against Killeen on January 30 at 6pm.
