Wall Claims 7th Straight District Title in Blowout Fashion

WALL, TX-- The Wall Hawks defeated the Kermit Yellowjackets 56-0 on Friday night and secured their seventh straight district title along with a perfect 10-0 regular season record.

"[Past players] started it out right," senior quarterback Brock Rosenquist said of the winning tradition at Wall. "We've never really left that behind. We've carried that through everything. We know what the standard is and we're going to have to live up to it."

On a slick, muddy field, the run-oriented Hawks had to step away from their potent run game early on.

"I think for us, because we weren't able to move [Kermit] off the ball, we felt we were being negated by a sloppy field,"  Head Coach Houston Guy said. "The passing game coming in to tonight was huge. I can't remember a quarterback in the last 10 to 12 years [for Wall] having four passing touchdowns in a game. We like to hang our hat on running the ball, but we practice the pass every day and it came up big tonight."

Rosenquist would finish the night five-for-seven with 117 yards and four touchdowns.

"[Passing] was a little more fun than getting hit every play," said a grinning Rosenquist. "We're going to go back to our ground game for the next five or six weeks."

Following a Tymber Carr interception in the first quarter, Wall would get the scoring started with a one play drive that saw senior running back Garrett Stephens explode into the end zone from 30 yards out.

Wall would force a Kermit three-and-out on the very next drive. But Wall would turn the ball over on downs following the Kermit punt.

Kermit would follow suit with Wall and turn the ball over on downs at the Wall 20 yardline. Senior Casey Braden would then tote the ball 80 yards for the score on the very next play. A Mitchell Horton extra-point would make the score 14-0 late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Wall would need four plays to score their third touchdown of the night. Rosenquist would cap off an 85 yard drive with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Lucas Hurtado to extend their lead to 21-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Horton and the Hawks would surprise the Yellowjackets with a successful onside kick. On the next play from scrimmage, Rosenquist would find Coleman Coon for a 44 yard touchdown pass to push the Hawk lead to 28-0 in the second quarter.

After another turnover on downs for Kermit, Rosenquist and Stephens would link up again for another touchdown pass, giving Wall a commanding 35-0 lead going into the half and Wall didn't look back.

Wall would score 21 more points in the second half, but it was the defense getting it done for the Hawks in the second half.

The Hawk's defense would limit Kermit to just 77 yards of total offense in the second half.

"We're excited and we've got a lot of really good players," said Wall Defensive Coordinator Craig Slaughter. "They make us coaches look smart. We've got a good group. I'm excited going forward to the playoffs for sure."

With the score at 42-0, the Hawks started to put in their backup players to get some reps ahead of playoffs.

"There's been times in my career where I've been on the other side," said an animated Slaughter. "It's frustrating because you're watching those teams develop their players, and that's when we get to develop our players against their first-string guys. That's next year's team getting a lot of meaningful time and it's fun."

Former junior varsity quarterback, Mason Fuchs was among those who got meaningful time in the blowout win. Fuchs would cap off the scoring with a four yard touchdown run late in the game. Fuchs is regarded by the Wall coaches as a solid candidate to replace the senior Rosenquist next season.

When all things were said and done, Wall finished the night with 442 yards of offense and their second consecutive shutout.

Wall will face the Friona Chieftans in Snyder next Friday for the bi-district round of playoffs.
