SAN ANGELO, TX-- The gunman who opened fire on the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs outside of San Antonio, killing 26 and wounding 20 more, started his undiginified military career at Goodfellow Air Force Base.

Devin Kelley, 26, enrolled at Goodfellow AFB as a student after completing basic training in January 2010.

In 2011, Kelley went to Holloman AFB in New Mexico as a Traffic Maintenance Apprentice before being court-martialed and imprisoned on charges of Assault and Aggravated Assault of his first wife and his stepson.

The 12 month sentence would be carried out by Kelly at the Naval Consolidated Brig, Miramar Military Prison in San Diego, California. Kelly also received a reduction in rank from an E-3, Airman First Class, to and E-1, Private.

Kelley also once escaped from a mental health facility after making threats to his superiors and attempting to smuggle weapons on to the base he was stationed on, according to a 2012 report.
