There is a structure fire at DeCoty Coffee on 1920 Austin St.
Alarms have been rung at the San Angelo Fire Department. Apparently a Coffee Roaster has caught fire. The smell of burnt coffee is filling the air.
We have people on the scene and will give more details as they come available.
Update 12:38 p.m.:
The Fire department appears to have put out the fire from the amount of smoke out of the exhaust vents.
Firemen are in full “scuba gear” for fear of unknown chemicals in the smoke.
Update 12:47 p.m.:
Smoke continues to pour out of DeCoty Coffee as firemen drink bottled water before rotating back inside to tend to the fire and smoke.
Austin St. is blocked and three pumper fire trucks are on the scene.
Update 1:30 p.m.:
SAFD is in the process of cleaning up. The Fire has been extinguished, through the flawless execution of an existing fire plan, states Battalion Chief Long. Austin St. should be cleared within the hour.
Update 2:00 p.m.
"Good outcome today Fire's out. Nobody was hurt, and we didn't lose any equipment" said Battalion Chief Long of the San Angelo Fire Department. This is not the first occurrence of a fire at the DeCoty facility, he said. Over the years, the DeCoty has laid out emergency response plans for situations like this, in prior coordination with the SAFD. Inside DeCoty's coffee roasting plant is an intricate maze of venting and fire suppression systems, the Chief said. "It's nice when a plan comes together," he said.
Firemen donned oxygen masks, slang term "scuba gear," or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, because of the chemicals in the fire suppression system, the Chief said.
At the time of the first alarm inside the DeCoty facility, all employees evacuated the building. As the fire was tended by SAFD, the only personnel in the building were the firefighters, according to the Chief.
The Chief said that all of the flames were contained inside the ventilation system. No open flames were visible.
