SAN ANGELO, TX-- On Friday, at a school pep-rally for the Central Bobcat's game against Midland Lee, Junior Quarterback Maverick McIvor was presented with his Built Ford Tough Player of the Week Award for his performance against Killeen Shoemaker on Sept. 21.
Every week, Ford gives an award to one player from each classification across the state for their performance on the field.
Mack Harper, a Sales Manager for Jim Bass Cars and Truck, and other staff presented the award to McIvor in front of Central High School faculty and students.
"It's special," said Harper. "It just shows you the hard work these kids put in, not only in sports but off the field as well. It makes us proud that little bitty San Angelo is recognized across the whole state of Texas."
In the game against Shoemaker, McIvor went 21 for 27 passing, 228 yards and five touchdowns. The Junior also rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown while also catching a 15-yard touchdown pass from Henry Teeter.
"None of this is just me," said McIvor. "It's our offensive line and coaching. Honestly, our offensive line and receivers deserve so much praise. They get slept on."
This award doesn't take in to account just the on-field performance of the players. Factors such as volunteer work and grades are taken into account.
While presenting the award, Harper praised McIvor for his work with his church and "nearly perfect" 3.9 GPA.
"We put a lot of emphasis on [grades]," said Central Head Coach Brent Davis. "That's why we're all here, to get an education. Most of our kids do that and we're proud of that."
When asked about McIvor passing his success on to his teammates, Coach Davis said that trait shows "just how humble he is and what kind of a young man he is."
"He's an awesome kid. He's a great football player. He's a really great student," said Davis. "He's the whole package."
The undefeated Bobcats welcome the undefeated Midland Lee Rebels to San Angelo Stadium tonight in Central's first home game of district play.
